Leadership & Institutional Development

John Boggs learned leadership where it is proven rather than described — in command, under pressure, with consequences that cannot be undone. Across more than thirty years as a United States Marine Corps infantry officer, he rose to Colonel, his senior assignments placing him at the strategic center of the institution: Chief of Staff of the National Defense University, Dean at the Eisenhower School, and a Military Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, having served on the staffs of two Secretaries of Defense.
He now brings that experience to the people who lead — chief executives, founders, boards, and the family principals who carry consequential responsibility. He is a practicing executive coach and a member of the Forbes Coaches Council, working with senior leaders across government, the military, and business.
His method is plain and hard-won: help a leader think clearly, communicate directly, and hold composure when the stakes are highest. He is candid, he listens closely, and he asks the questions others avoid. What he offers is not the theory of leadership but its practice — the distance between knowing what good leadership looks like and doing it when pressure, ambiguity, and consequence arrive together.
He is an ICF- and EMCC Global–certified coach, credentialed in the Leadership Circle Profile, the Leadership Practices Inventory, and Positive Intelligence, and the author of Developing Business Leadership Skills.
At J.R. Larkin & Co., John brings that judgment to the human dimension of a family's or an enterprise's most consequential decisions — a succession, a founder stepping back, a next generation preparing to lead. These are not only financial or legal matters; they are leadership decisions, and legacy decisions. He helps clients develop the people who will carry what they have built — so that what endures does not depend on any one person, but on the strength of those who follow.
